Transforming South Africa’s Fresh Produce Sector
South Africa’s agricultural sector is a cornerstone of the national economy, yet its fresh produce markets remain deeply unequal. Commissioned by Kagiso Trust and informed by the Competition Commission’s Fresh Produce Market Inquiry, this report offers a civil society perspective on the systemic challenges facing small-scale and black-owned farms. It explores market concentration, anti-competitive practices, and barriers to entry, while proposing actionable reforms to foster inclusion, sustainability, and equitable growth across the fresh produce value chain.
